Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Societal behavior principles to influence the understanding of the lyrics and Performative Hypotheses that construct the meanings of the song lyrics. The song is selected not only for its popularity but also for its rich symbolic content that reflects contemporary social conditions. The title, referencing the N95 mask, extends beyond the literal context of the COVID-19 pandemic and serves as a broader metaphor for the layers of falseness in modern social life. A qualitative approach is applied using content analysis and hermeneutic methods. Data are derived from the song’s lyrics, its music video, and literature related to the socio-cultural context of the United States. Kendrick Lamar’s “N95” critiques societal behaviors, particularly consumerism, performative morality, and social media’s role in shaping identity. The N95 mask symbolizes how people hide behind materialism and curated personas. Lamar challenges superficial success standards and performative activism, exposing how societal norms often lead to inauthentic moral expressions. Through a performative lens, Lamar’s lyrics act as speech acts, prompting reflection and reaction. The repeated command “Take off” urges listeners to shed false identities imposed by consumer culture. Provocative language and dynamic beats heighten the song’s critical message, transforming it from commentary to a call for societal introspection. In conclusion, this study asserts that “N95” functions not merely as a musical composition but also as a medium of social critique addressing consumerist behavior and identity formation in the digital age. Kendrick Lamar successfully combines artistic elements with strong moral messages, making the song highly relevant in contemporary socio-cultural discourse.
