Abstract

Paradox is a contradiction between two things, but it makes sense when considered more deeply. Paradoxes coexist with human life; humans cannot be separated from paradoxes because humans often consciously or unconsciously make paradoxes to live. The novel 1984 tells how the main character, Winston Smith, lives in a totalitarian society, thus making him paradoxical in every thought and action. This research puts forward two research questions: 1) why does Winston Smith commit paradoxes? 2) how does Winston Smith apply paradoxes? This research aims to discuss what paradoxes appear in Winston Smith. This research is qualitative. This research is conducted using an objective approach and Roy Sorensen's paradox theory. To collect data in this research, the researcher uses reading and note-taking techniques. The result shows that Winston Smith does three paradoxes. First is the paradox of thoughts. This paradox shows the contradiction of Winston's thoughts. Second, the paradox of action; this paradox shows how Winston's actions contradict his other actions. Third, it is included in other kinds of paradoxes that contains how Winston's thoughts and actions are contradictory. This novel illustrates the paradoxes of the main character who must take conflicting thoughts and actions to achieve his desires although, consequently, he has to experience inner conflicts.
