Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the intrinsic elements in the novel The Idiot by Elif Batuman with a focus on three main aspects, namely characters, plot, and theme. This study aims to reveal how these three elements are interrelated in building the story structure and conveying the main message in the novel. Based on these objectives, the formulation of the research questions proposed is as follows: What are the character, the plot, and the theme in the novel The Idiot by Elif Batuman? This study is descriptive qualitative because it focuses on the analysis of literary texts in depth and systematically. The data analyzed are in the form of excerpts from the novel that represent characterization, plot stages, and central themes in the story. The results of the study show that there are two main characters who play important roles in the development of the story, namely Selin as the main character and Ivan as a supporting character who is the center of Selin's emotional conflict. The storyline in this novel consists of five basic components, namely: exposition, conflict, climax, anticlimax, and resolution. This theme is expressed through the journey of the main character, Selin, and her interactions with Ivan, who experiences emotional confusion, social alienation, and uncertainty in understanding herself, others, and the meaning of her life.
