Abstract
This research aims to describe how the main character’s hardiness enables him to overcome all the problems he faces. To find out all, the writer watched the movie The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) repeatedly as the main data source. The writer can interpret Chris’s hardiness to survive from all the problems he has encountered while matching with the theory that the writer has read. The research employs the descriptive qualitative method and utilizes primary data from the movie script and secondary sources such as articles, reviews, and literary theories to describe how Chris’ survives all the problems he has and the role of family to support him from economic hardships. The writer uses objective theory because the theory views the literary work as an independent object in the sense that it is independent of the interest of the writer and the readers, nor is it related to the circumstances surrounding it. It highlights the significance of mutual support among individuals, emphasizing that survival involves not only the physical endurance of characters but also psychological resilience and social dynamics that influence a community's ability to withstand adversities. Chris Gardner embodies hardiness as he confronts life’s trials with resilience, commitment to his family, an internal locus of control, and a positive view of challenges, positioning himself to carve out a successful future against economic hardships. Ultimately, the research argues that the journey of the protagonist, Chris Gardner, serves as a poignant depiction of hardiness and the indomitable spirit of humanity in the pursuit of happiness amidst economic hardships.
