Abstract
This study investigates the use of prefixes in Kelly Barnhill’s novel The Girl Who Drank the Moon, recognizing their significant role in shaping word meaning and narrative nuances. Understanding prefix usage offers valuable insights into the author’s linguistic choices and enriches the reading experience. The research addresses two primary questions: What types of prefixes are employed in the novel, and how do these prefixes alter the meaning of the root words? This analysis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of their impact on the text. The theoretical framework for this study is rooted in morphology, specifically focusing on affixes and their classification, as described by linguists such as Nwokedi et al. (2021). This includes various types of prefixes and their functions in word formation and meaning change. A descriptive qualitative research method was applied, involving careful reading and observation of the novel to identify words containing prefixes. The data were then classified based on predefined prefix categories and analyzed to explain how meaning changes occurred. The findings reveal 98 instances of prefixes, categorized into seven types, with negative prefixes being the most frequent (36.7%). Other significant categories include chronological (17.3%), reservative (16.3%), and age, size, and degree prefixes (13.3%). The study demonstrates that these prefixes profoundly modify the meaning of root words, thereby contributing to the novel’s themes, character development, and plot. The author’s deliberate use of these prefixes adds considerable depth to the narrative and enhances reader comprehension.
