Abstract

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event, series of events, or set of circumstances. PTSD has been known by many names in the past, such as “shell shock” during the years of World War I and “combat fatigue” after World War II, but PTSD does not just happen to combat veterans. This research focuses on Adeline from the novel Hunting Adeline written by H.D. Carlton. It focused on the PTSD impacts she suffered after being a rape victim and how she manages to overcome them. This study uses the theory of Trauma from Horowitz (1989). He defined it as a sudden and forceful event that overwhelms a person’s ability to respond to it, recognizing that trauma does not need to involve actual physical harm to oneself; an event can be traumatic if it contradicts one’s worldview and overpowers one’s ability to cope. The research method is a literature review. This research shows the impacts of PTSD that Adeline suffers are anxiety, being violated, being overthinking, and being aggressive. She overcomes them by writing diaries to write down her thoughts, giving assurance to calm her mind, making proper personal space for herself, and taking self-defence training to protect herself.
