Abstract

Communication is an important thing to build good relationship with others. This research aims to find out the hidden meanings that want to be conveyed through implicature and the role of implicature in building suspense in this movie through two key questions: (1) What are the types of implicatures found in The Menu movie? (2) How does the implicature contribute to the suspense in The Menu movie? This research uses descriptive qualitative method and objective approach by using implicature theory by Herbert Paul Grice (1975) in his book Studies in the Way of Words to analyse the dialogue and identify the types of implicature used by the characters. The theory categorizes 2 types of implicature, conventional implicature and conversational implicature. Grice devides conversational implicature into generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. The research also uses Brewer and Lichtenstein’s theory to analyse the contribution of implicature in building suspense. The results of this study show that three types of implicature are found in this movie such as 13 data of conventional implicature, 3 data of generalized conversational implicature, and 41 data of particularized conversational implicature. The researcher found utterances containing implicature that fulfil the three indicators those are 3 data of initiating event, 3 data of hold, and 2 data of outcome. The Menu movie deliberately use implicature to soften the threat and build the suspense of the movie to attract more attention from the audience.
