Abstract

Dorian Gray is the main character in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. He is portrayed as an easily influenced young man who has no personal views on love before meeting Lord Henry Wotton. Lord Henry is a character who consistently conveys a view of life that highly values beauty, pleasure, and outward appearance. These views slowly shape Dorian’s perspective, affecting the way he sees love. Therefore, this study purposes to: 1) analyze how Lord Henry’s influence shapes Dorian Gray’s view of love, and 2) analyze how the view of love shapes Dorian’s behavior towards Sibyl Vane. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with objective theory. This research is conducted using the literature study method. Reading and taking notes techniques are used in data collection. The results of this study show that Dorian Gray begin to see love as something that depends on beauty and perfection, not as an emotional attachment. After being influenced by Lord Henry, Dorian sees Sibyl not as an individual, but as an ideal image based on her appearance. When that expectation is not fulfilled, Dorian acts cold, rejecting, and in denial. The result of these findings is that Dorian’s love is conditional, and the behavior he shows towards Sibyl is a manifestation of the view of love that is shaped by Lord Henry’s influence.
