Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of lexical relations found in the lyrics of Taylor Swift's Speak Now album and analyze how these relations contribute to the emotional and thematic elements in the lyrics. Using the theory of Saeed (2003), the research focuses on six types of lexical relations: synonymy, antonym, polysemy, homonymy, hyponymy, and meronym. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method and uses 14 song lyrics as data sources. The analysis reveals five types of lexical relations: polysemy 22 findings, antonym 16, meronym 11, hyponymy 8, and synonymy 1, with polysemy being the most dominant. This study did not find any homonymy in the analyzed song lyrics. The results indicate that lexical relations not only function as semantic structures but also significantly enhance the emotional and thematic expression in the songs. Polysemy adds layered meanings, antonym creates contrasting contexts, while meronym and hyponymy build vivid imagery. This study concludes that lexical relations are essential tools for delivering deeper emotional impact and thematic strength in song lyrics.
