Abstract

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird offers a compelling exploration of morality within a racially segregated and ethically conflicted society. This study aims to analyse how moral and ethical values are portrayed through the development and interaction of key characters. The first objective is to examine how moral values are reflected through characters’ internal growth and interpersonal dynamics. The second objective is to explore how ethical values are represented through societal structures, legal institutions, and communal norms. This is a descriptive qualitative study using an objective and sociological literary approach, and it applies normative ethical theories, deontology, virtue ethics, and care ethics. Data is collected using library research methods, reading, and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that moral values such as courage, integrity, and empathy are primarily represented through the characters of Atticus Finch, Scout, Jem, and Boo Radley, whose moral decisions reflect internal development and ethical reasoning. Ethical values, particularly justice and human dignity, are often challenged by institutional failures and social prejudice, most notably in Tom Robinson’s trial. The study concludes that To Kill a Mockingbird offers a nuanced portrayal of moral growth within flawed ethical systems, affirming literature’s role as a mirror and critique of social values.
