Abstract

Refusals are an essential part of pragmatic competence, particularly within contexts involving power, hierarchy, and social dynamics. This study aimed to describe the types and the strategies of refusal expression used by the characters in the HBO series House of the Dragon Season 1. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method and uses the theory of Yang and Beebe et al in analyzing the types and strategies of refusal. The result of this study showed that the most dominant type of refusal was refusal of request, while the most commonly used refusal strategies were indirect strategies, especially excuse/reason/explanation and statement of principle. The types of refusal were found 9 subcategories of refusal types in the refusal of requests, refusal of offers, refusal of invitations, and refusal of suggestions. In addition, the characters in the series applied 10 out of 14 refusal strategies, which are flat, negative willingness/ability, statement of regret, excuse/reason/explanation, statement of alternative, statement of principle, attempt to dissuade the interlocutor, acceptance that function as refusal, avoidance, and adjunct (statement of positive opinion/feeling/agreement, and gratitude/appreciation).
