Abstract
This study aims to analyze the features of women's language used by the three main female characters in the film His Three Daughters (2023). Women's language refers to linguistic traits associated with politeness, emotional expression, and relational sensitivity. The study applies Robbin Lakoff's (1973) theory to identify the features and uses Pearson et al.'s (1991) framework to examine the functions of these features. This research employs descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from the film script and verified by observing the original movie. The researcher used documentation, observation, and note-taking as data collecting techniques to identify each utterance. The analysis was conducted by classifying each utterance based on Lakoff's the features and coding them using specific categories. Analyzing a total of 197 data from the movie. The findings reveal the nine out of ten features proposed by Lakoff appear in the characters' dialogues. The most frequently used features are lexical hedges or fillers with 93 (47%) data, followed by intensifiers with 49 (25%) data, empathic stress with 18 (9%) data, tag question with 17 (9%) data, empty adjectives with 8 (4%) data, rising intonation with 5 (3%) data, superpolite forms with 4 (2%) data, hypercorrect grammar with 2 (1%) data, and avoid of strong swear words with 1 (1%) data. The dominant functions are to express uncertainty with 80 (41%) and followed by to express feelings or opinions with 75 (86%) data, to soften an utterance with 15 (7%) data, to get a response with 25 (13%) data, and to start a discussion with 2 (1%) data. These results suggest that women's language functions not only as a tool for emotional expression but also as a strategic means to maintain harmony, avoid confrontation, and manage interpersonal dynamics within a family context.
