Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of men’s and women’s language features in the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and analyze the most dominant language features used by each character referring to the theories of Lakoff (2004) and Coates (2013). This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation and note-taking based on the characters’ dialogues in the movie. The results of this study show that female character, Andie Anderson, uses all ten women’s language features proposed by Lakoff (2004) with a total 64 data and the most dominant feature is lexical hedges or fillers with a total of 17 utterances (26.56%). Meanwhile, the male character, Benjamin Barry, used all five men’s language features proposed by Coates (2013) with a total of 42 data and the most dominant language feature used is swearing and taboo language with a total of 12 utterances (28.57%). Moreover, there are additional findings showing that Benjamin uses 33 utterances that are included in the women’s language features, while Andie uses 8 utterances that are included in the men’s language features. This proves that language use is flexible and influenced by the context of communication, not only by gender.
