Abstract

The novel A Room with a View by E.M. Forster shows the process of value changes experienced by the main character, Lucy Honeychurch. This research aims to analyze the changes in Lucy’s values as a result of the influence of conservative English culture during the Edwardian era and the more free and expressive Italian culture. The focus of this research is divided into two main objectives: 1) to analyze the influence of English social and cultural values on Lucy’s personality, and 2) to analyze the influence of Lucy’s experiences in Italy on her changing values. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with an objective literary approach. The theory used is Shalom Schwartz’s Theory of Basic Human Values. Data collection was done through library research by reading, taking notes, and analyzing. The results show that conservative English values, such as obedience to etiquette, the importance of reputation, and social norms, made Lucy feel pressured and lose her personal freedom. On the other hand, Italian values that highlight freedom, spontaneity, and self-expression gave Lucy space to reflect on herself and start questioning the social rules that had tied her down. The change in Lucy’s values reflects an inner transformation influenced not only by her physical environment but also by her personal awareness. This study concludes that the change in Lucy’s values symbolizes an individual’s struggle to free herself from social pressure in order to find her true identity and live a life that is true to herself.
