Abstract

Social media has become the main space for football supporters to express support, criticism, and community identity through various language strategies. This study aims to analyze the linguistic characteristics, rhetorical elements, and gendered rhetorical patterns in Indonesian football fans' posts on social media, specifically on the Instagram and TikTok platforms. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through non-participant observation and analyzed based on linguistic theory and Aristotle's classical rhetoric. In analyzing, the writer uses the content analysis method through the stages of data reduction, data presentation in tables, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that of the 60 data analyzed, 24 data reflected linguistic characteristics such as the use of slang, figurative language, hashtags, and multimodality. A total of 29 data contained ethos, pathos, and logos rhetorical elements in conveying support or criticism of the team and players. Meanwhile, 7 data showed differences in rhetorical patterns between male and female supporters, where men tend to use direct and evaluative communication styles, while women are more emotionally expressive and collaborative. This study shows that digital rhetoric in supporter communities is not only a communication tool, but also a means to build collective identity, emotional solidarity, as well as an effective tool of persuasion in the digital public space. These results enrich the understanding of how language strategies are used in shaping public opinion in the sports field.
