Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types, meanings, and functions of slang words found in TikTok content related to tourism promotion. In this study, the writer discusses two problems: 1) What are the types and meanings of slang words used by TikTok content creators in promoting tourism? and 2) What are the functions of those slang words? By using a qualitative descriptive method, the writer provides a description of slang words used in tourism-related TikTok captions. The data were collected from TikTok videos posted between 2023 and 2024. The writer chose Allan and Burridge’s (2006) theory to classify the slang into five types: fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. The functions of slang were analyzed using Leech’s (1981) theory of language functions, which includes expressive, informational, directive, aesthetic, and phatic functions. As a result, the writer found 34 slang words used in TikTok tourism content. Based on the classification, there are 14 data of fresh and creative slang, 7 data of flippant slang, 5 data of imitative slang, 5 data of clipping slang, and 3 data of acronym slang. Meanwhile, the functions of slang found in this study are: 13 data serve an informational function, 8 data serve an expressive function, 7 data serve a directive function, 2 data serve an aesthetic function, and 4 data serve a phatic function. The use of slang in TikTok tourism content shows how informal language is used to inform destinations, express feelings, and engage audiences.
