Abstract

Personality development refers to changes in a person’s personality over time in terms of behavior, emotions, and thought patterns. In Brit Bennett’s The Mothers, personality development is portrayed as a gradual process shaped by both internal and external factors. The main character, Nadia Turner, experiences a personality change since her mother left her. This study analyzes how Nadia Turner’s personality develops throughout the novel and identifies the kind of development she experiences. This study is a library research and qualitative research. This study uses Abram’s objective approach and Hurlock’s theory of personality development as its theoretical framework. The results of this study indicate that Nadia’s personality development is driven by internal factors, namely guilt, and external factors, namely the influences of her late mother, her best friend Aubrey, and her father. Nadia changes from a reckless, secretive, avoidant and selfish person into someone responsible, honest, confrontational, and caring. Her journey reflects a positive personality development characterized by emotional maturity and selfgrowth.
