Abstract

This study examines various factors that influence the development of Mia Thermopolis' character in Meg Cabot's novel The Princess Diaries. This study applies Thibaut and Kelley's Social Exchange Theory and Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Approach to analyze the psychological and social dynamics that shape Mia's transformation. The findings reveal that friendship, emotional conflict, identity exploration, and social expectations are the primary factors contributing to Mia’s growth. The study specifically highlights how Mia's interactions with her friend Lilly Moscovitz, the pressure of royal responsibilities, and her internal struggles play a significant role in shaping her personality, emotional resilience, and sense of identity. The study concludes that character development during adolescence is influenced by a combination of personal experiences, interpersonal relationships, and psychological adaptation to change.
