Abstract
This thesis aims to answer two objectives which are: (1) to identify maxims that are flouted by the characters of the Penguins of Madagascar movie in their conversation; (2) to identify the functions of humor expressed by the characters through maxim flouting in the Penguins of Madagascar movie. This research employed the descriptive qualitative method.The data were in the form of words, phrases and clauses. The contexts of the data were dialogues. The source of the data was a movie entitled Penguins of Madagascar. There are findings found in this research: (1) there are maxims flouting done by the characters in Penguins of Madagascar movie with 38% of maxims manner violation, 19% of maxim quality violation, 19% of maxim quantity, and 25% of maxim relation; (2) there are functions of humor expressed through maxim flouting in the Penguins of Madagascar movie. The most dominant maxim violation found in the movie is maxim manner violation.
