Abstract
Of Mice and Men depictsloneliness and the American dream as the main themes in the story. This study aims to determine the factors that cause loneliness, the reflection of the American dream, and the influence of loneliness on the failure to achieve the American dream hoped by the characters in Of Mice and Men. This study uses descriptive qualitative method and objective approach by using loneliness theory by Daniel Perlman and Letitia Anne Peplau in their work Towards a Social Psychological of Loneliness to analyze the text and identify the factors that cause loneliness experienced by the characters. The results of this study show that there are several factors that cause loneliness experienced by the characters, such as nomadic life, low quality of personal relationship, lack of social relationship, inability to build social relationship, inability to fit in with social environment, racial discrimination, and bad treatment from the neighborhood. The reflection of the American dream, such as dream of home ownership, dream of personal fulfillment, and dream of equality. In addition, there are several influences of loneliness on the failure of the characters in achieving the dream, such as referring to demotivation and hopelessness, pessimism, and fatal mistakes.
