Abstract

The novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas tells the story of the main character, Starr Carter, who responds to the social injustices around her and undergoes significant changes in her attitude and behavior. This research aims to identify the forms of activism that emerge, as well as the causes and impacts of that activism in the novel The Hate U Give. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and an objective approach, employing the New Social Movement theory to analyze forms of activism, as well as Patricia Hill Collins intersectionality theory to identify the causes and impacts of activism. This research analyzes the forms of activism, its causes, and the impact of activism. The results of this study found that there are two main types of activism: a) practical activism, which includes peaceful protest actions, public speaking, and community organizing, and b) slacktivism, which is manifested through social media campaigns, online petitions, and the formation of online groups. Then, the main causes of the emergence of activism are racial injustice, police violence, intersectional oppression, and media representation. Additionally, the impact of activism in this novel includes individual empowerment and community solidarity, efforts to challenge stereotypes, fostering pride in Black identity, as well as inspiring hope and raising public awareness of social injustice issues. This research shows that activism in The Hate U Give serves as a tool for social change through collective engagement and awareness of identity intersections.
