Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language in the lyrics of Dan Luke and the Raid album Out of the Blue. Their label describes the album as a coming-of-age work. The first objective is to find what types of figurative language are presented in the album Out of the Blue by Dan Luke and The Raid. The second objective is to identify the most common type of figurative language in the album Out of the Blue by Dan Luke and The Raid. Using Perrine's (2018) classification as a theory, a descriptive qualitative method is used to collect and analyze lyrics from the album via YouTube Music and Genius.com. The study found 47 identifiable data points that can be classified as figurative language. The data revealed 8 types of figurative language. Metaphor is the most common type, 14 (30%) data, followed by symbolism with 9 (19%) data, and paradox 6 is (13%) data. Personification is 6 (13%) data, while hyperbole is 5 (11%) data, irony is 3(6%) data, simile is 3 (6%) data, and metonymy is 1 (2%) data. The findings show that this album uses 8 types of figurative language: metaphor, symbolism, paradox, personification, hyperbole, irony, simile, and metonymy. Metaphor is the most common type of figurative language in the album Out of the Blue by Dan Luke and the Raid.
