Abstract
Duality and obsession are the two dominant themes explored in Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This study aims to analyze how these two themes are portrayed through the character of Dr. Jekyll. The first objective is to explain how Jekyll’s struggle reflecting the hypocrisy in Victorian society. The second objective is to examine Jekyll’s obsession in creating a morally pure self. The third objective is to reveal how Jekyll using Hyde as a scapegoat from guilt and consequences. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method, using the objective approach as the primary literary theory. Data is collected through library research, including reading and note-taking techniques. The results show that duality and is portrayed through the conflict between Jekyll’s public persona and his hidden desires, while obsession is reflected in his repeated experiments and moral anxiety. These themes emphasize how the novel presents a deep exploration of human nature and its internal contradictions. Ultimately, the story reveals that the pursuit of perfection may lead to the loss of control and personal destruction
