Abstract

Isolation is a situation in which an individual is separated from social relationships with others. Isolation in its meaning is not only physical, but also psychological and emotional, which makes an individual feel disconnected from the world around them. This research aims to study how isolation becomes the central theme in the absurd drama, Endgame (1957) by Samuel Beckett. In doing the research, the writer proposes two questions, namely a) What are the effects of isolation on the characters, and b) How do the characters deal with their isolation? This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data are mainly taken from the play as the writer uses Objective Theory to help him deal with problems. The writer also gets some help from the secondary sources of data, such as articles from journals, books, and literary reviews he has read on Google. In his study, the writer finally found that isolation brings negative effects to the characters, such as a) interdependency, b) fear of the outside world, c) suffering, d) anger and frustration, e) fear of death, f) irreligiosity, g) hopelessness. The writer also concludes that the characters in the play have dealt with the problems and effects through a) cooperation and b) acceptance. Those things have made the characters capable of surviving in their extreme isolation.
