Abstract

Character formation is a dynamic process of forming moral values and personality through the interaction of internal and external factors. Internal factors include motivation, emotions, and genetic tendencies, while external factors include the environment and social relationships. This study aims to analyze the character formation of Naomi in Naomi by Tanizaki Junichiro. The main focus of this study is to examine the id, ego, superego, and repression mechanisms, as well as the role of genetics, environment, and social interaction in the character development of Naomi. Using M.H. Abrams' objective approach and Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, this study explores intrinsic elements such as dialogue, narrative, and actions that depict Naomi's psychological transformation. Aristotle's characterization theory is also employed to strengthen the analysis of how moral traits and habits shape a character's identity. This study finds that Naomi's character is formed through the dynamics of internal conflict and the influence of a complex social environment. Aspects such as id, ego, superego, and repression mechanisms play a significant role in shaping her personality. Genetic factors provide the biological and emotional foundation, while interactions with other characters, particularly Joji, serve as triggers for significant changes in Naomi's attitude and identity. Thus, this study demonstrates that the formation of Naomi's character reflects a blend of internal drives and external pressures that collectively shape her psychological journey within the story.
