Abstract

The illocutionary act is one of the subfields of pragmatic. It came within the range of linguistics. This study focuses on that illocutionary act with two main objectives. The first objective is to describe the types of illocutionary act. The second objective is to analyze the role of illocutionary act and power relations. The study covers illocutionary acts based on John Searle theory of speech acts in The Tempest by William Shakespeare. The study utilizes the qualitative method in conducting the research. The study is analyzed through the scope of pragmatic. The data collecting techniques are watching the play of The Tempest, note-taking the utterances, and reading the play of The Tempest the Wordsworth Classics edition. The data analyzing techniques are examining, coding, sorting, and organizing. The findings of the study are the five types of illocutionary act with the allocation of 47% belonging to Assertive, 25% belonging to Directive, 13% belonging to Commissive, 10% belonging to Expressive, and 5% belonging to Declaration. The other findings show that the role of illocutionary act and power relations are that the illocutionary act has the function as an engine to show power relations in the story of The Tempest.
