Abstract
Racism is a problem that concerns moral, social, and human rights. Because of its broad impact on social stability and the potential to trigger various mental problems for affected individuals, racism requires attention and treatment. The novel Homegoing depicts the lives of characters from generation to generation who face multiple levels of racism in their environment. The racism experienced by the characters not only becomes a social obstacle but also causes mental disorders. This research puts forward two research questions: 1) what levels of racism are depicted in the novel Homegoing? and 2) how does racism impact the mental health of Homegoing’s characters? This research aims to discuss the level of racism depicted in the novel and to reveal how racism can impact the mental health of the characters. This research is qualitative. This research is carried out using an objective approach, Camara Phyllis Jones’ levels of racism theory, and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. To collect data in this research, the researcher uses reading and note-taking techniques. The results show that there are four levels of racism in the novel i.e., institutionalized racism, personally mediated racism, internalized racism, and intraracial racism. The impact of racism on mental health occurs because racism disrupts the id, ego, and superego of the characters. The characters experience mental disorders comprising realistic anxiety, moral anxiety, psychotic depression, and interjective depression. The novel depicts racism as a widespread problem damaging the systemic and personal aspects of the character’s life.
