Abstract
The research entitled “The Study of Code Switching Found in Rizal Mantovani’s film “Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika” is aimed to find code switching that used by actresses and actors in that film. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of code switching and also the reasons of code switching that probably existand used in the conversation on its film. The author analyzes types and reasons of code switching based on Hoffman’s theory. The data were collected by watching the film, writing the transcript and then classified those data into each purpose. The analysis focuses on five types and seven reasons of code switching, they are: inter-sentential, intra sentential, emblematic, establishing continuity from previous speaker, and involving a change of pronunciation. For the reasons there are purposes as follows: talking about particular topic, quoting somebody’s word, interjection, emphatic, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech, and group identity. Based on the result, there areevents of 41 code switching that exist in every conversation with the languages that used: English, Indonesia, Javanese, and Arabic. However, the main languages that dominate the conversation are English and Indonesia. ____________________________________________________________ Keyword: language, code switching, film
