Abstract
This research analyses the idiomatic expressions in Stephen Chbosky;s Beauty and the Beast movie. Idiom is one of the non-literal languages. The writer concerns the importance of studying idiomatic expressions in order to communicate well. The method of research applied in this study uses descriptive qualitative method. Descriptive research is used to describe the existing phenomena of idiomatic expressions and the types of meaning as accurately as possible. Qualitative method provides results that are rich and detailed without using the statistic calculation. The researcher has found 95 idiomatic expressions based on Adam Makkai (1972), which are included to 4 types of idiomatic expressions. Those are 59 Phrasal Verb Idioms, 32 Tourneur Idioms, 3 Incorporating Verb Idioms and 1 Phrasal Compound Idiom. The Phrasal Verb Idiom dominates the result of types of idiomatic expressions’s classification. It can be concluded that the domination of the types of idiomatic expressions in the Stephen Chbosky’s Beauty and the Beast movie is the Phrasal Verb Idiom. In addition, the researcher found 4 types of meaning from 95 idiomatic expressions, which are 26 Connotative meanings, 57 Conceptual meanings, 6 Denotative meanings and 6 Transferred meanings. The conceptual meaning dominates the result of types of meaning’s classification. It can be concluded that the domination of the types of meaning is the conceptual meaning.
