Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the portrait of Chinese-American values in Amy Tan’s Two Kinds. There are three problems analyzed in this study: (1) The Chinese values described in the short story; (2) The American values described in the short story; (3) the cultural values influence in mother-daughter relationship. The writer uses M.H. Abrams’s Objective Theory and Assimilation Theory to analyze the cultural background of the main characters in the short story. The data were analyzed by using library research. The data were collected by reading the short story repeatedly, reading some references related to the theory and the short story, taking note of important data, arranging the data and classifying the important data, and drawing the conclusion. The analysis of this research results in some findings. The first one is the description of the Chinese and American values portrayed in Amy Tan’s Two Kinds. The Chinese culture emphasize the values that force the children to always follow their parents’ order and desire, while the American culture emphasizes on independence and individuality. The second one is the cultural clash that occur between the mother and daughter. The cultural clash between the Chinese immigrant mother and American-born daughter happen because of the disagreement of two cultures about certain values. The different culture orientation creates tension on mother-daughter relationship in Two Kinds. Keywords: Two Kinds, culture, immigrant, mother-daughter
