Abstract
This study aims to describe: (1) the forms of conflict that occur in the main character in the Scarlet Letter Novel; (2) factors that influence the conflict that occurs in the Scarlet Letter novel; (3) consequences of conflicts that occur. The subject of this research is the Scarlet Letter novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The research focuses on problems related to the form of conflict that hit the main character, the factors that influence the conflict and the consequences that occur from the conflict. This study uses an objective approach and data observation method. By using this method the writer simply goes to the library, buys some books or searches for data on the internet to collect data. The data type used is secondary data such as scholarly journals, articles, essays and novels itself while the data sources are from books and the internet. After the writer decides to use the method of collecting data and data types that are used, the last writer uses the method of data analysis namely qualitative and interpretive analysis. The results of the study are described as follows: first, the types of conflicts which occur in the main character Arthur Dimmesdale. From all the parts of the theory used only Approach- Avoidance conflict is the only type of conflict which can be identified. Second, the factors that influence the conflict which occurred in the main character Arthur Dimmesdale in Scarlet Letter are personal factors and situational factors. Personal factors consist of desire and self-esteem while situational factors consist of social, psychosocial and cultural. Third, the impact resulting from the conflict occurred are frustrations, disappointments, helplessness and anger. Keywords: novels, conflicts, consequences, psychology
