Abstract

This research was aimed to improve students’ speaking skill using Task-Based Communication Method for eleventh grade students of SMKN 1 Godean in the academic year of 2019/2020. The subject of this study was 32 students of class XI AK (Accounting) 3. The research method applied was classroom action research. This study was conducted in two cycles which consisted of 4 meetings. One meeting was for pre-test. The first cycle was conducted in two meetings and the second cycle was conducted in one meeting. The instruments used in this study were speaking test, field notes, questionnaire, interview and documentation. The instruments were used to collect qualitative and quantitative data. The result of the study showed that the students’ renponse in learning speaking was good. Students enjoyed the activities using task-based communication method in class by having a discussion, sharing and cooperating well. In addition, by implementing Task-Based Communication Method, there were some obstacles that the students and the teacher faced in learning speaking. For the students the problems faced were limited of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and translation. Meanwhile, the problems that teacher faced were interpersonal skill and the condition of the school. The results of tests proved that Task-Based Communication Method was effective to improve students’ speaking skill. It showed students’ mean from pre-test (51), post-test I (77.33), and post-test II (90.87). Moreover, the students’ mean improvement in percentage was about 26% from pre-test to post-test I, and 39% from pre-test to post-test II. Keywords: cards, speaking skill, interaction, conversation.
