Abstract

This research aims to describe the implementation of clustering technique to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive text, to find out the students’ participation in learning descriptive text using clustering technique, including to discover its improvement in learning descriptive text using clustering technique at SMK Muhammadiyah Berbah in academic year 2019/2020. The researcher conducted this research to tenth year students of Tata Busana which consisted of 30 students. The research was conducted using classroom action research where the researcher acted as the teacher. The researcher conducted the research in two cycles which consisted of four meetings. The data of this research were in forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the learning-teaching process of writing descriptive text using clustering technique, interviewing the students of class X Tata Busana and the English teacher. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were acquired through the pre-test, post-test I and the post-test II. The result of this research showed how the implementation of the clustering technique in improving students’ skill in writing descriptive text, It could get students’ participation about attention, students were more active, motivated and serious in learning writing descriptive text. The results of the pre-test and post-tests proved that the clustering technique can improve the students’ writing skill. It could help students easier to express the ideas into descriptive text. The students who just gained 67.49 in the pre-test, were able to increase their score up to 75 in the post-test I, the students who passed the Minimum Mastery Criterion can increase score up to 79.87 in the post-test II. Moreover from the mean improvement percentage about 16.6% from the pre-test, 36.6% from the post-test I, and 86.6% from the post-test II. Related to the result, it showed there was improvement of students’ score in writing descriptive text
