Abstract

This paper discusses about the use of imagery in “The Journey” written by Mary Oliver. The aim of this paper is to describe the types of imagery in the poem and also to show the relation between imagery and the meaning in the poem. The study to get the findings is a library research. The writer uses an objective approach to help her analyze the data. The collected data of this study were analyzed through descriptive qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of textual text. The data were collected from the diction, figurative aspects, and their relation with each other. The result of this study shows that Mary Oliver uses some types of imagery in her poem. There are four imagery from six types of imagery. Those are visual imagery, auditory imagery, tactile imagery, and kinaesthetic imagery. This paper also presents relation between imagery and the meaning. The dominant imagery which appears in this poem is kinaesthetic imagery. Kinaesthetic imagery showed there is related between the imagery and the meaning, this imagery showed strengthens the meaning of this poem. Mary Oliver also used metaphor and personification as figurative language in her poem. Key words: Imagery analysis, poetry, The journey
