Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the upper class life in Eugene O’ Neill’s Abortion represented by Jack Townsend, the main character of the play. The research is a descriptive qualitative research. In analysing the subject, the writer used two theories; objective theory and sociology theory. The methods used by the writer to collect data were reading the script repeatedly and reading some references related to the topic studied. The data were obtained by examining the attitudes and actions of the characters represented in the characterization and the plot, and by interpreting them on the theories. The research concludes that Jack Townsend, the main character of the play, is used by the playwright to portray the upper class’ lives in the society Through the illustrations of Jack Towndsend’s lifestyles, attitudes, actions, and relations with his family, friends, and other characters in the play, it can be seen that the upper class people are presented as people who are wealthy and powerful, and people who have high social status.
