Abstract
The final paper analyzes illocutionary acts used by Hally Ballard in Master Harold… and the Boys movie. This study concerns two problems. The first is to find out the types of illocutionary acts used by Hally Ballard in this movie. The second is the most dominant type used by Hally Ballard in this movie. The writer analyzed the illocutionary acts by using Searle’s theory. The final paper used a descriptive qualitative method for collecting the data because the data are utterances uttered by Hally Ballard in this movie. To analyze and categorize the data, the writer used three methods, which are shifting by taking notes of the utterance that contains illocutionary acts, classifying the data by categorizing the utterance using Searle’s category, and coding. The final result represents that from the first question, the writer found five types of illocutionary acts used by Hally Ballard in this movie. First is the representative type which is uttered through claiming (33%), suggesting (5%), asserting (3%), reporting (1%), and complaining (20%). Second is the directive type which is uttered through commanding (11%), requesting (9%), and advising (1%). Third is the commissive type which is uttered through promising (3%). Fourth is the expressive type which is uttered through praising (11%), blaming (1%), and condoling (1%). The last is the declarative type which is uttered through naming (1%). From the second question, the writer found claiming from representative type is the most dominant form of illocutionary act with 33% as final result.
