Abstract

English is a main subject for schools in the learning-teaching process, such as a selected picture. Therefore, this study aims to determine the students' ability and motivation in writing descriptive text using selected pictures. This research relies on quantitative descriptive analysis. The respondents of this study were students of class XI Accounting 2 SMKN 1 Godean in the academic year 2021-2022. The researcher selected one class as the respondent, which consisted of 34 students. The students were tested by applying the selected picture. The data were analyzed quantitatively by measuring the ability of students' organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Data analysis shows that 1 (one) student has an excellent category value; 3 (three) students have good category scores; 4 (four) students have an average score category, and 26 (twenty-six) students have a poor score category. The average score of students' abilities to write descriptive text using selected pictures is 72.65. Based on the score classification adapted from Kemendikbud 2017 as poor. This study shows that students' ability to write descriptive text using selected picture media is still lacking. It is proven by the results of the highest scores of only a few students, while the low scores of almost half of the number of students. This means that using selected pictures as a medium for writing descriptive text is still lacking. Furthermore, the results of students' learning motivation showed the highest percentage; that is, 82% are in the Cognitive Terms choice, which consists of Driven by Basic Human Needs, Degree of Effort Expended, and Internal Individual Forces in Control. This means that students have high motivation from Cognitive Terms. Keywords: ability, motivation, descriptive text, selected picture Di era modern ini, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sudah menjadi kewajiban bagi sekolah untuk melakukan penggunaan media tertentu dalam proses belajar-mengajar, seperti gambar terpilih. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan dan motivasi siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif dengan menggunakan gambar terpilih. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis deskriptif kuantitatif. Responden penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI Akuntansi 2 SMKN 1 Godean tahun pelajaran 2021-2022. Peneliti memilih satu kelas sebagai responden yang terdiri dari 34 siswa. Siswa diuji dengan mendeskripsikan gambar yang dipilih. Data dianalisis secara kuantitatif dengan mengukur kemampuan organisasi siswa, tata bahasa, kosa kata, dan mekanika. Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa 1 (satu) siswa memiliki nilai kategori sangat baik; 3 (tiga) siswa memiliki nilai kategori baik; 4 (empat) siswa memiliki kategori nilai sedang, dan 26 (dua puluh enam) siswa memiliki kategori nilai kurang. Nilai rata-rata kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif dengan menggunakan gambar terpilih adalah 72.65. Berdasarkan klasifikasi score menurut Kemendikbud 2017 adalah buruk. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif dengan menggunakan media gambar pilihan masih kurang. Terbukti dengan hasil nilai tertinggi hanya beberapa siswa, sedangkan nilai terendah hampir separuh dari jumlah siswa. Artinya penggunaan gambar terpilih sebagai media penulisan teks deskriptif masih kurang. Pada bagian motivasi siswa, hasil motivasi belajar siswa menunjukkan persentase tertinggi; yaitu, 81% berada dalam pilihan kognitif, yang terdiri dari dorongan kebutuhan dasar manusia, tingkat usaha yang dikeluarkan, dan kekuatan individu internal yang terkendali.. Artinya siswa memiliki motivasi yang tinggi dari pandangan kognitif. Kata kunci: kemampuan, motivasi, teks deskriptif, gambar terpilih
