Abstract

This study concerns about wordplays in Owl City’s song. The writer is interested to the song’s of Owl City, whose name is Adam Young, because the uniqueness of the song lyrics and the way the songs represent a message is unusual, especially in the way Young uses the wordplay. The songs are the metaphors for things or situations Adam Young has dealt with. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the wordplay found in Owl City’s songs. This research has three objectives. The first one is to find out the types of wordplay found in Owl City’s songs. The second is to find out what the most used type of wordplay by Owl City in his songs is. The third is to find out the functions of the wordplay found. The method of research in this study is a qualitative descriptive research. The reference books were used as the basic theories to find the subcategories of wordplay and the functions of wordplay. The object of this research is Owl City’s songs. The data of this research are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The data collecting technique is done by observing and noting. After that, the analysis technique is done by making a content analysis. The data are put into the data sheet. The result of this research shows that types of wordplay found in Owl City’s song are homophone, homonym, paronym, synonym, malapropism, simile, naming, idiomatic, repetition, alliteration, assonance and consonance. Based on the findings, the repetition is the most used type of wordplay. This because the repetition leads people can easily remember the song. Last, the functions of wordplay found in Owl City’s are telling jokes, breaking taboo, and raising serious effect. Keywords: wordplay, pun, song lyric, Owl City, Adam Young
