Abstract

Remaining single is against social norms since partnered living manifested in marriage plays a role as a belief in society. Supported by hegemonic femininity that is constructed by patriarchy, the state of singleness weighs down women's life. Dependency is closely related to the notion of what being a woman is. It is experienced by Ilona and Emily, the characters in two short stories entitled, A Rose for Emily and Ilona. Through the similar idea portrayed in both short stories, this study aims to discuss and analyze how women living single in patriarchal society. The first objective of this study is to discuss Emily and Ilona's experiences by being single in patriarchal society. Second objective is to discover how both characters face their singleness in patriarchal society. It is a qualitative study that employs the objective approach by M.H. Abrams, comparative literature by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and Claudio Guillén, and the study of hegemonic femininity and single women in patriarchal society. To collect the data, the researcher uses reading and note-taking techniques. This study reveals that in both short stories, women living single in patriarchal society, either by choice or by circumstance, face two interconnected things: hegemonic femininity and social perception. The short stories imply the universal values that through hegemonic femininity as a standard and a vocal bridge in perpetuating the belief of marriage, women who violate it or remain living single become the problem and obtain negative social perceptions.
