Abstract

This study discusses the development of Catherine's character as the main character in the novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. This study aims to find out Catherine's character and to know how Catherine's character develops. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method based on objective theory which focuses on examining literary works from intrinsic elements, such as theme, characters and characterization, setting and plot. In this study, the writer found that Catherine's character is naive, innocent, and imaginative in her way of thinking due to her lack of experience. Catherine's character development occurred due to the experiences she gained during her journey to Bath and Northanger Abbey and made Catherine's character more mature, realistic and wise.
