Abstract

This study analyzes the portrayal of characters in Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games novels, with a particular focus on the third book, Mockingjay. Using an analytical descriptive approach and qualitative methods, this study explores the narrative elements that show the characteristics of the characters in the novel, with M.H. Abrams' objective theory as the theoretical foundation. The main objectives of this study are, to identify and analyze the characterization of Katniss Everdeen as the main protagonist, and to describe the characterization of other rivals in the novel. The results revealed that Katniss is portrayed as having a complex character, including the traits of being fair, obedient, caring, courageous, ambitious, unselfish, heroic / willing to sacrifice, intelligent / smart, and having a noble mission. In contrast, other antagonists and competitors are often portrayed with negative traits such as being cunning, selfish, stupid, aggressive, and cruel. The analysis also explores how these characterizations evolve throughout the trilogy, with a particular emphasis on the change and growth of characters in Mockingjay. This research provides an in-depth insight into Collins' character portrayal techniques and their impact on the overall narrative
