Abstract
This research falls under the umbrella of linguistics which discusses idiomatic expressions that contain figurative or connotative meanings. An idiom is a group of words that, when expressed together, can produce a meaning different from the literal meaning. In other words, an idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be explained by the literal interpretation of the words. Idioms are often an important part of a language because they reflect the culture, history, and speech habits of native speakers. The use of idioms can enrich communication, add color and life to conversations, and are often used to convey ideas or emotions in a more interesting and effective way. This research analyzes idiomatic expressions found in the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig. The results classify the idiomatic expressions in Little Women into six types based on the theory by Michael Carthy and Felicity O'Dell, aiming to identify the types of idioms and explain the meanings of the idioms found in the film. The data obtained in this study were identified using a qualitative descriptive method. The results discuss how idioms fall into certain categories and their meanings. This research reveals two findings. First, it identifies the types of idiomatic expressions found in the film Little Women, including Similes, Binomials, Proverbs, Euphemisms, Cliches, and Fixed Statements. Second, this research analyzes the idiomatic expressions with the most dominant frequency in the findings. Finally, from the collected data, Fixed Statements are found to be the most frequently occurring idioms in the research on the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig.
