Abstract
This research analyzes the swear words found in the movie The Irishman by Martin Scorsese. Swear words are a type of language that uses inappropriate language and dirty words. Therefore, the aim of this research is to identify types of swear words and analyze the motives for using swear words found in the movie. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Qualitative analysis is used to explain the results of the analysis which discusses how a swear word is classified into a certain type and to explain why the types and motifs of swear words are related to each other. The research uses listening and recording techniques to collect data. This research found that the movie The Irishman (2019) was classified into five types of swear words based on Pinker's (2007) theory. It was found that there were a total of 174 swear words, 16 types of Dysphemism Swearing (9%), 59 data types of Abusive Swearing(34%), 13 data types of Idiomatic Swearing(7%), 60 data types of Emphatic Swearing (35%), and 26 data types of Cathartic Swearing (15%). The most dominant type of swear words is Emphatic swearing which appears in 60 data (35%) which are used by characters to emphasize things that have powerful meaning
