Abstract
Self-compassion is an effective means of fostering a healthy relationship with oneself. One’s rejection, dissatisfaction, judgement, and critical attitudes towards oneself often occur due to one’s lack of self-compassion. The novels The Midnight Library and Hujan explore the journeys of the main characters as they encounter various adversities in life. The main characters choose self-compassion as a strategy to reconcile and coexist with those adversities. This study aims to analyze the causes, reasons, and process of the main characters in achieving self-compassion. This research is a library research conducted using the self-compassion theory by Kristin Neff and comparative literature theory by Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek. To collect the data for this research, the researcher uses the reading and note-taking technique. The results of this research indicate that the primary reason for the main characters to embrace self-compassion is the desire to live a better life. This desire is influenced by three things namely traumatic events, loneliness, and issues in romantic relationship. In its process, the main characters’ self-compassion is obtained by applying the three main components of self-compassion namely selfkindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. The universal values that are identified by the main characters’ self-compassion journeys include: 1) compassion means acceptance and 2) everything takes time.
