Abstract
Freedom is a basic human right, and each person is responsible for their own actions and decisions. However, the freedom of some individuals can sometimes be restricted. In most cases, these restrictions come from society or the family environment. These restrictions serve as the possible problem that drives the desire to pursue one's own freedom. The Age of Innocence and Tarian Bumi are both novels that imply the theme of freedom. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how these factors affect and serve as the drive behind the characters' will of freedom through Jean-Paul Sartre’s Existentialism view. The first objective is to find out the reasons and causes of the characters fighting for freedom. The second objective aims to find out the way characters pursue their freedom. This research is based on library research. This research uses two kinds of data sources: the two novels as primary data and other sources such as articles, journals, books, etc., as secondary data. This research is conducted using reading and note-taking techniques. Despite the differences in cultural backgrounds, this research finds that social norms and family issues serve as a universal driving force behind the characters' will of freedom. They are constantly pressured to fit into their respective social images and family expectations.
