Abstract

In the novel Confession by Kanae Minato there are characters that show the duality of character, they can possess and be good while also being bad and vice versa, it is called moral ambiguity. This study describes and examines the characterization and moral ambiguity of three main characters in Kanae Minato's novel 'Confession'. In the process of research, the researcher uses Abrams’s objective approach while using secondary references about moral ambiguity to help maintain the results. The researcher also uses note taking techniques as the method of collecting the data. Then the researcher categorizes each of the data based on their good and bad characterization and starts to analyze the data that show moral ambiguity. Yuko Moriguchi balances respect and motherly care with vengefulness, using manipulation to seek justice. Shuya Watanabe combines creativity and empathy with manipulative behavior and violence driven by a desire for his mother's approval. Naoki Shitamura presents a friendly face while showing traits of deceitfulness, manipulation, and violence, complicating perceptions of innocence as a child and guilt as the perpetrator. Through their actions and perspectives, the characters exemplify complex moral dilemmas, challenging conventional judgments of good and bad.
