Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive analysis of Papuan Malay Creole, focusing on its structural composition and syntactic uniqueness within the AustronesianPapuan contact zone. Through descriptive linguistic methods and typological comparisons, the research examines three core aspects: phrase structures, clause patterns, and distinct syntactic pattern that distinguish this creole from other Malay varieties. Key findings reveal Papuan Malay's blend of Austronesian roots with Papuan influences, evident in its genitive-noun word order, serial verb constructions, and absence of morphologically marked passive voice. The language's development as a lingua franca in multilingual West Papua has led to simplified morphology and clause-chaining patterns atypical of Standard Malay. Methodologically, the paper employs syntactic analysis frameworks and elicitation techniques to document features like prosodic distinctions in phrase-final f0 movements and stress-based word recognition. The study also engages with creole formation theories, including relexification and competition-selection models, to explain how substrate languages and universal grammar principles shaped its evolution. These findings contribute to broader discussions in creole linguistics by demonstrating how language contact and sociopolitical dynamics foster syntactic innovation. For linguists, the analysis offers insights into typological variations, while educators and policymakers gain perspectives on preserving linguistic diversity in rapidly changing sociocultural landscapes.
