Abstract

The research purposes to analyze the development of theme through the intrinsic element in the Second Class Citizen novel by Buchi Emecheta. There are three main problems discussed in this research: (1) the development of theme through plots, (2) the development of theme through characters, (3) the development of theme through setting. In this research, the writer uses the feminism theory by Marry Wollstonecraft to analyze Adah's personality and then it is applied on analyzing the intrinsic elements by using the objective theory by M.HAbrams. The research uses descriptive qualitative which focuses on the context in dialog and narration. The data are collected by reading the novel repeatedly, reading some references related to the theory and the novel, taking note of important data, arranging the data, classifying the important data, and drawing the conclusion. There are several things that have been found in this research. They are; (1) the writer uses theme development through plot. The story of Seecond Class Citizen Novel applies the linear plot. It tells Adah’s journey of life when she is child until being a mother. (2) The development of theme through Adah characters before marriage and after marriage. Adah’s character is still smart, responsible, brave, passionate and strong woman either before she gets married or after she gets married. (3) The development of theme through setting places in Lagos and London. The both cities are place where Adah lives and survive of her life. Keywords: development, theme, Abrams, feminism.
