Abstract

This study aims to examine the types and semantic changes of loanwords in Indonesian that originate from Dutch, as found in Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies documentation and note-taking techniques to collect data from the novel, which is then analyzed using a componential analysis method. The results of this research identified 75 loanwords from Dutch, which were divided into two groups: 22 (29%) loanwords classified as adoption and 53 (71%) loanwords classified as adaptation. This indicates that changes in phonological and morphological aspects are more dominant. Additionally, an analysis of meaning changes based on Baugh's (1993) classification indicates that 33 (44%) loanwords have undergone meaning changes: 10 (14%) words experienced an extension of meaning, 16 (21%) words experienced a narrowing of meaning, 4 (5%) words experienced a regeneration of meaning, and 3 (4%) words experienced a degeneration of meaning. Additional findings also show that 42 (56%) loanwords did not undergo any change in meaning. These findings reflect the dynamic nature of language interaction and the important role of semantic transformation in enriching the vocabulary of the Indonesian language.
