Abstract

This study aims to examine tourists’ perceptions of street musicians in the Malioboro area, Yogyakarta, identify the factors influencing these perceptions, and understand the existing regulations. The research is motivated by the importance of cultural attractions, particularly street art, in enriching the tourist experience and shaping the image of cultural tourism destinations. As a cultural tourism icon of Yogyakarta, Malioboro serves as a platform for street musicians to interact directly with tourists. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and documentation involving both tourists and street musicians in Malioboro. The findings reveal that, overall, tourists have a positive perception of street musicians, as they are seen to enhance the atmosphere, provide entertainment, and offer distinctive cultural interactions. However, some negative perceptions arise from the behavior of a few musicians, which is considered disruptive. Factors influencing tourists’ perceptions include the quality of performances, interaction, security, comfort, and the atmosphere created by the musicians. The regulation of street musicians is considered suboptimal, despite some support in the form of performance schedules and cultural identification numbers for certain musicians. This study concludes that street musicians are an essential part of the cultural attraction in Malioboro and require more structured management to maximize their cultural, social, and economic benefits. The study also acknowledges limitations in the number of informants and the depth of regulation coverage.
